  5.     The government has lost all control in Mogadishu, and chaos
  6. has taken over. Armed mobs, some of them renegade soldiers from
  7. President Mohammed Siad Barre's army, roam the city shooting
  8. and looting. Troops shouting "Allah Akbar!" (God is great!)
  9. invaded the Roman Catholic cathedral, drove the congregation
  10. out with tear gas and truncheons, then set fire to the
  11. building. An Italian priest who witnessed the attack said many
  12. worshipers were killed.

  14.     As rebel fighters from the United Somali Congress called in
  15. reinforcements, the U.S., Italy and France flew 800 diplomats
  16. and other foreign residents to safety in separate rescue
  17. missions last week. Soldiers looted the American embassy as
  18. soon as the last helicopter took off. Reported Italian
  19. Ambassador Mario Sica, who left Saturday: "The city is being
  20. sacked as in the days of Genghis Khan."

  22.     Holed up with the remnants of his army, Siad Barre offered
  23. again last week to negotiate with the three main insurgent
  24. groups that have overturned his 21-year dictatorship. A rebel
  25. spokesman in Rome said they "would not be that stupid."
